What Is A Film Negative Scanner?
A film negative scanner is a machine that turns regular film negatives into digital files. Old school
photographers were not exactly eager to give up their world of film and darkrooms in exchange for a computer and
memory card. But they have warmed up to the idea of digital media and for good reason. You can take thousands of
shots and not even worry about having to buy more film. This reduces the cost of photography in a huge way.
Instead of keeping shoe boxes, or photo albums filled with photos all the images can be stored on a computer,
CD, or memory stick. Once a photo is digital it can be enhanced or altered in any numerous amount of ways. Being
able to transfer photos electronically is another major benefit of digital photography.
Even with all the benefits of digital photography professional photographers often still prefer using film
camera. This is because they are able to take better quality photographs on film. There are many variables that a
photographer has more control over when using a film camera instead of a digital one. Digital cameras attempt to
offer the same variable control but have been unable to do so while keeping the camera at a reasonable price.
Through the use of a negative scanner a dark room is unnecessary. Film photos can be transferred into a
computer. Once these photos are in the computer they can be corrected, or changed using software like photoshop.
When the photographer is happy with the photo he can print it and publish it online.
A negative scanner makes a copy of the film negative and stores it on the computer like it is a developed
photograph. This process saves time, and does not use chemicals that are harmful to the environment like developing
photographs in a dark room. It also allows a photographer to produce the images in a way that he wants unlike if he
had to pay to have them processed.
Enhancing, and making changes to a photo once it is in the computer is easy. With photoshop you can get rid of
red eyes, change the colour, or the lighting. You can also re-size the photo or try out some special effects on it.
This never takes long and if you don't like it you can changed it back to the way it was. You could take one photo
and end up with numerous different variations of it.
Negative scanners come in prices for everyone's budget. At home you would find one of the low price scanners to
be good enough to suit your needs. These home models can turn your negatives or slides into digital images. This is
fantastic for those of us who have shoe boxes filled with old negatives that are gathering dust. Now you can
preserve them as digital files for ease of viewing and sharing. For the professional there are negative scanners
that are very pricey. These are not necessary for us at home, and are mostly used by magazines or newspaper
companies.
Speaking of newspapers a negative scanner is very beneficial. Newspaper companies often have thousands of
negatives in archives. Many of these will have historical significance and using a film negative scanner and
prevent them from deteriorating and being lost forever. Most newspapers these days are fully digitally established
and a negative scanner is the way to publish those old photos today.
